The strange patrons of a bar become stranger when the moon falls from the sky
The story of ‘A Moonless Night’ evolves in a bar where lost souls congregate, reminiscent of David Lynch’s ‘Blue Velvet’ bar, stuck in an endless night. An archetypal bar, with archetypal customers: a diva, a noisy braggart, two chess players following their own rules, a waiter with his head in the clouds, etc.
In the film you follow their obsessions, and also the possibility of redemption. Is it possible to be saved? And do we want to be saved?
The film moves fluidly between forms; Eva Schumacher’s poetry, macroscopic images of materials, fantastic landscapes, songs and ecstatic play. Eva studied why we’re more accepting of the strange in the dark. Night is the time when shadows multiply until they take over every part of the world. Light is more scarce, and we have to direct it to better see the nooks and crannies.
The album of ‘A Moonless Night’ features songs from the film and will also be released in October on streaming platforms as well as a limited-edition vinyl, which features bonus tracks, poetry and beautiful artwork.
This evening there will be a full screening of ‘A Moonless Night’. After the screening of the film, there will be a Q&A with the director of the movie Laurien Schreuder.
