Snowapple releases new album Wrong Feet, a tribute to Sean Bergin: jazz with an African and Caribbean flavour, reimagined as catchy tunes with vocal harmonies.
Snowapple’s fifth album, Wrong Feet, will be released on Zip Records on 29 September 2023. A release concert will be presented on 30 September in Bimhuis in Amsterdam. On Wrong Feet, Snowapple trio (Laurien, Una and Laura) sings in collaboration with an international group of musicians from Senegal, Mexico, South Africa, and Scotland.
This album is a tribute to Una’s father: Sean Bergin, an important figure in the international jazz scene. Bergin was an accomplished composer who managed to combine his South African roots with typically Dutch improvised music. Singing and theatre were important elements in his work. Wrong Feet features five songs with compositions and lyrics by Bergin, reimagined as catchy tunes with vocal harmonies by the three vocalists of Snowapple. The release concert will take place on September 30th at Bimhuis, a venue where Bergin performed regularly. The album also includes new compositions written by Dutch jazz singer Una Bergin, Latvian singer and pianist Laura Polence and singer and clarinettist Laurien Schreuder.
The songs speak about finding beauty in the everyday, childlike joy and nature, but also dreams of someone far away, the strangeness and inconvenience of having a body, and how the ‘wrong feet’ sometimes will walk over you (and how you can decide to not let this happen anymore). Wrong Feet invites you to experience the world in the playful, absurdist and humoristic manner of its three leading ladies.
